Update 16 April 98:

JDC memebers can download beta 2 of JPC It boots from dos into an austere windowing system and you can run HotJava (HJ) or jdk 1.1.4 programs, although only HJ is included. Seems to have all sorts of support for network tricks like DHCP and NIS and such, which I've no way to play with. The beta will expire in 60 days after download. Without HotJavaViews or eSuite or something, I don't see how it could be any use to anyone who isn't a developer...but it runs reasonably well on a 486 with 16 megs in MSDOS 7. Maybe when the new beta of FreeBuilder is released, the combination will prove interesting...

Previously:

Sun has proposed a product called JavaPC that will deliver a JVM that runs along side Dos and Windows with full JDK compatibility. The product is due to ship Q298 at a price of about 100 US dollars.

Yep. The heat is on. - ClarkEvans

Does anyone know how to make JavaPC run without a network card? I only get an error window. --StefanReich, 16-Apr-98
Ja. Ich habe auch diese Problem. In diese README finde ich die 'command line parameters'. At the near bottom of the readme file it tells you how to modify javaos.ini for standalone use. It is however quite boring that way :) --adric (Aren't you on the ungottlich mailing list? :P )
Wow, thanks, Adric. Was ist die "ungottlich" Mailing-Liste?? --StefanReich, 17-Apr-98
Wiesst du wirklich nicht? On diese Seite wo man die 'JavaPC' nehmen darfen sind ein 'link' fuer die 'listserv' 'JavaPc-Interest@javaosft.com'. Unfortunatley two bad things have happened: The list which sun intended to be an announce list was accidentally made open, and the subscription was made far too easy (click link). So for the last several days the list has generated hundreds of misdirected sign off and unsubscribe messages for every post that's actually about java pc. I'll post here if and when it gets straightened out, but DON'T subscribe or spost to the list until you hear that it is fixed. Either a thousand idiots can't handle listserv commands, the listserv won't let them off, or both. I lean towards the former. They won't even stop posting despite numerous requests by the posters trying to discuss JPC. I'm going to start a faq I think.
