Introduction
The contributor is the first role defined in the JOS Public License. Who is a contributor?
A contributor is anyone who puts their work under the JOS Public License.
- An individual author, working alone, may become a contributor by putting their own work under the JOS Public License. An author contributes a copy of their work to the community so that others may be able to use it, learn from it, and improve upon it.
A team, working together on a JOS project, should contribute their work consistently under the JOS Public License. A team contributes opinions, ideas, teaching, mentoring, and other intangible things to the community so that others may be able to grow in their skills and experience.
A commercial or non-profit organization or governmental agency may become a contributor by putting their existing products under the JOS Public License.
About contributions
Although we might wish we could accept all kinds of contributions, there are a few things required by contributors.
- A contributor must own something in order to contribute it to the project. You cannot contribute something owned by someone else.
Non-contributor
Most people using software issued under the JOS Public License are not contributors. They may be end-users or distributors.
