As some of us begin to write preliminary code for JOS, we should hammer out the copyright notice that would be included at the top of the source code for each file we create.
Perhaps it will be as simple as a general sentence about the JOS license with a URL pointing to more information, or perhaps it should be a full paragraph explaining the highlights of the license.
In any case, we can use this page to store the official copy of it, so that programmers can refer to this page when creating their code. I propose the following example, so that someone with more knowledge of the official JOS license information can fill in something better:
/** * LEGAL INFORMATION -- PLEASE READ: * The source code within this file is part of the JOS (Java * Operating System) project. It is freely available for commercial * and non-commercial purposes, as is all source code belonging to * the JOS project. Please see the following site for more info: * http://www.jos.org/ */
I know -- it's horrible, horrible, horrible! I purposely made it incredibly bad so that someone out there will feel compelled to do something better! :)
My point is that we are better off getting it straight from the beginning, so let's figure out the best wording. There also seems to be some confusion as to what stance we're taking with JOS. Is it dis'd under the GNU license? The PublicSoftware license? A variant of the perl copy-left (aka ArtisticLicense)? Or some hybrid that needs to be written up specifically for JOS? Is there a discussion already brewing on this topic on the site?
