My name is Michael Richter and I'm a software developer. (Sounds like an Alcoholics Anonymous introduction, doesn't it?)
I live in Ottawa, ON (Canada), but was born in Hemer, Germany. Between my birth and the present time I have lived in two German cities (Hemer and Lahr) and several Canadian ones (Edmonton, Inuvik, Chilliwack, Moose Jaw, Regina, Gloucester, Nepean, Kanata, Ottawa). I almost made it to living and working in Houston, Texas (USA), but the American government decided that since I didn't have a university degree, I was obviously incapable of doing what I had been doing for a living for the past nine years. No bitterness here, however....
I've been working as a programmer for just over nine years now. (I got bit with the computer bug back in 1978, however.) My career started with embedded systems, moved to computer telephony and now lies in encryption software.
I first encountered Java with the first public alpha release. I didn't like it. I looked at it again with JDK 1.0. I still didn't like the language, but I did like the concept of the JVM. My distaste for the actual language still remains (send e-mail for details if you're interested), but I don't actively hate it, and in many ways I prefer it to most of its alternatives so I'll use it until I can get an Eiffel->JVM compiler. Even if I have to make one myself. There is already a Java-based port of Python -- my favorite scripting language -- so I'm happy for high-level programming issues.
