Shall we get started?

- ToddMiller ( 17 July 2001 )

As it grew, the JOS Project spread far beyond the limited scope outlined by its original members. Most fortunately, it turned into a research project. See also ResearchProjectPurpose for more information on the purpose of a research project.

It works. The project has a stated goal. Some might seek to change the goal. Some might believe that this is the wrong goal. Some might seek to destroy the strength of this project, what this project does best. I seek to clarify the role the project might have in helping others build a Java-based operating system.

The strength of the project is this: a well-known forum to discuss the construction of a new kind of operating system based on Java technologies. Here and here alone they can share their experience, views, perspectives and research. I do not wish to expel or exclude others simply because they do not believe as I do. This project includes everyone, and it should.

If anyone wishes to start another project with the express goal of building a specific implementation of a Java-based operating system they can do so. They have done so. We should not try to change this project into something is not. Rather, we should learn to use the project for what it is. It is an incubator for dreams, wishes and proposals. It provides the infrastructure for its sister projects, such as feedback (jos-general@lists.sourceforge.net), documentation (wiki) and other practices.

Our important contribution to the larger community is the identification of all the issues of creating a modern operating system. This research project helps us identify and clarify complex issues. It proposes how an issue might possibly be resolved. We do not have to agree on the "best" solution because one solution is not necessarily "best" for everyone.
