JoZilla was conceived on 23 February, 1998, when I innocently suggested on http://www.mozilla.org that a thing to do would be to convert the Mozilla C/C++ code to Java and call it JoZilla. I also suggested that Netscape release the Javigator code. These ideas evoked alot of negative criticism leveled against me, and finally someone from JOS suggested that I check out http://www.jos.org for a more supportive atmosphere. Ah! I liked what I saw, so I formed the JoZilla Project Team, whose main goal is to deliver a free 100% pure Java Browser, and release it as a JOS Browser Reference Implementation.
Many things have happened since then. Here is a short summary:
- The JoZilla ( JosBrowser ) Project joined the XML Application Framework (XAS) experimental JOS applications working group. The XAS group will provide XML parsing, Object Tree Factories, and Java Bean Application Frameworks. Other group members
include:
- JOS member SteveMenard, a resource on compiler/interpreter issues, provided a first draft of his ECMAScript Interpreter to the JoZilla Project for review, and has joined the team as a JoZilla ECMAScript Consultant.
- Gerald Brose, the developer of JacORB (a free Java ORB under GPL), has agreed to help JoZilla support the inclusion of a JacORB in the JoZilla JosBrowser implementation, allowing JoZilla to utilize the Internet Inter-Object Protocol (IIOP). JacORB is a 100% pure Java implementation of the OMG's CORBA standard. You can see more information about JacORB at http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/~brose/jacorb . A chicken in every pot is no longer enough, now we want an ORB in every Browser!
- JOS member GrantSlender is working with OmegaBaphomet on a new way of layering the JoZilla components. Specifically he is working on TransportManager. This will implement a caching system that eventually will pre-fetch object for the user.
