Hello everybody! Following is a brief-but-long-winded explanation of why am interested in this project. If anyone has any comments, I can be reached at kamason@robots.com.

I originally started working at IBM on the NextStep porting project to the RS/6000 system. There, I became really familiar with Objective-C, to the extent that I wanted to create a free version.

Then came along OpenStep. I and a few others helped to start the GNU version of OpenStep, GNUstep (at http://www.gnustep.org/ ). I was one of the original idea people, and to this day I host and help to maintain its web site.

When the GNU Hurd was finally released for the first time, I read much about it, and Mach, and the service mechanisms that the people at FSF designed for it. I got really excited about working on that, but about nine months ago (June 97) I felt that something could be done better.

That's when I came up with the idea of writing an OS completely in Java. At that time, I knew nothing about the Jos project (just found out about it end of Feb. 98) or about Sun's JavaOS. However, in the last few months, I have designed quite a bit of the OS architecture in my head. Everything, including device drivers structure, multiple vs. single address space issues, how to include other languages, file systems, networking, bootstrapping, use of remote machine resources, etc. has been thought through. Much of it is based around RMI (Sun's Remote Method Invocation specification), which I feel is critical to the design of any O-O OS.

I would like to become a major design contributor to this project. Unfortunately, my work schedule is currently prohibiting this. Hopefully, this will change soon.

Wow! I already look forward to your contributions - MarkusPeter (btw... should you want to delete my comment again, feel free to do that).

OK... I've finally had a chance to type some stuff in. Go to KeithsDriverDesign to see it! I'll put some links to it from elsewhere soon. - KeithMason

Hi Keith, could you have a look at this DriverInterface, if you have any comments email me robfitz@geocities.com.
