The Be engineers, armed with knowledge of nearly as many GUIs as we are, came up with (and are still refining) an interface that seems to take the best from Macintosh, Windows, and X Window and blend it into a highly functional, yet pretty (?) design. Obviously I am in awe. I'd be perfectly happy if we just cloned the BeWindow system fom one end to the other (for starters), but they probably wouldn't like that... Anymore of this and I'll be starting BeOSUiTalk ahead of schedule.
For an indepth look at the interface and fuctionality of the BeOS, see their tour at http://www.be.com/products/beos_tour/index.html
I'm just going to borrow a couple screen shots to show the unitiated what it looks like.
This is the fullscreen thumbnail at the top of the tour. It's set up to show many of the obvious features and benefits of the OS.
Since PR1 or DR9, the Tracker (that's the bar menu with running tasks)
has evolved quite a bit. It can now be anywhere on the screen in any number of different configurations (like the MS task bar for instance)
and has a even more functionality. I am in search of newer shots, but it may have to wait until I get PR3 (DR/Intel). Here's the shot of the Tracker and TrackBar from the tour:
These shots and what's in them are copyrighted, trademarked, patented, owned, etc, by Be, Inc, and are here stricly for comparison and discussion. (P.S. I've updated the URL's for the screenshots, which were not displaying. - LestonBuell, 22 March 98.)
Thanks. Looks like they broke again. I'll look into it.
