There has been a flurry of email on the sorry state of the JOS site(s). This page is for discussion in the direction of remedying this problem, and expanding our web presence in useful ways .The page is organized according to known problems and suggestions for solving them.

Known Problems:

  1. Out of Date (includes broken links)
  2. Hard for Visitors
  3. main Not being Updated (despite dire warnings in the footnotes) (and being a mess besides)
  4. No existing channel for these sorts of problems? (until now :)
  5. Hard for new members to understand what's going on and what there role is.

Hard for Visitors:

My first bit would be to answer the cry for a page that actually tells newcomers what's going on. The Quarterly reports were nice (find link), and perhaps we can start them back up again once this is a bit sorted out.

An idea worth borrowing is the progress page at the GNUStep project ( http://www.gnustep.org/AboutGNUstep/ProgressOverview.html ) Take a look at it, if you're not familiar with it.

The Berlin Project also has a regular updates page for quick news. (see http://www.debian.org/berlin/status.html ).

For that matter, Debian has a quick news section on their front page, with links to the PRs (see http://www.debian.org)

If I follow the discussion of late, it seems like we want this sort of information to be outside the wiki (in the 'normal' WWW) and real easy to access/find, so the casual browser of prospect can see what we're up to, and how complete it is.

Either method would work better once we logically divide the work ahead of us. Some of this has been done with all of the namespace mucking that's gone on ( org.jos this and com.adric that) and our WorkingGroups structure.

Personally I like the front page the way it is. It has a nice layout and it's not too hard to understand. But we definately need to keep it up to date in order to not frighten away people who think we all died of a horrible disease in June of '98

Broken Links, Out of Date News:

Although this is also addressed below, the question of News might well be better off in the hands of a PRSteward. See PRIssues for details.

Consider this fair warning that the hunt for volunteers is open.

I like the idea of a PR Steward very much. They could write up a couple of pages about our efforts and they could continue to work with the WebSteward to keep the general public informed as developments occur.

Main and the front page ( http://www.jos.org )

It has been suggested that a WebSteward emerge, assuming responsibilty for the site.

Consider this fair warning that the hunt for volunteers is open.

Another website

At first I thought a new website would be best, but now I like the idea of WebStewards.. Different people could have different responsibilies of maintaning a support portion of this big web.. I think that a new Main page or maybe another page should be put up to help untangle the web (no pun intended) :) How we decide who gets to maintain what and what should get maintaned still needs to be decided however...
